What an invaluable opportunity to live up to the Outward Bound motto “To strive, to serve and not to yield” – by bravely facing and combating the HK Vertical 1000 abseiling challenge!

It is a great honour to represent the Outward Bound (Alumni) Association in this fundraising event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our mother school, thanks to the kind sponsorship of Professor Roy Chung and the Bright Future Charitable Foundation.

Backed by my Spartan experience, I pledge to be brave to attempt, willing to face difficulty, believe in accomplishing and step out to challenge.

Living a childhood in a rooftop slum, my siblings and I had little access to any sport – except a rubber band jump rope, and a duct tape newspaper football. Growing up, I grab every chance to exercise, try different sports and run obstacle races. I discovered my true passion for X-games only after I could support myself financially.

I’m honored to take part in this thrilling challenge, raising fund so more disadvantaged youths can access Outward Bound’s adventurous life-changing courses and find their passion. And I get to top-up my X-games list and experience the extreme adrenaline pump from 1000 feet above.

I believe the only way to keep advancing is to keep challenging yourself. Being on the radio, I get the thrills from doing live shows and handling unexpected situations. Sometimes we fail, and we learn. But it’s the challenge that makes it all worthwhile.

Put that thought to a fantastic cause, supported by one of my dearest and most generous friends Ms Clara Chan (Lee Kee Group), I can’t wait to start training, and see how this fundraise will benefit more people!!

This is going to be best experience after my highest bungee jump (2013) and giving birth to 2 girls!

Taking a three-day, 60KM Desert Challenge, sailing on the sea, running the Marathon, I myself is a deep believer of outward bound training. I enjoy the feelings of taking challenge, facing the difficulties, and being strong. HK vertical 1000 is a great opportunity to explore my boundaries and I am quite looking forward to it.

As the board secretary of Wuhan College, I saw the difference OBHK made to our students. After the training of Outward Bound, they became more confident and more resilient. I would like to expend the impact of Outward Bound by sharing my own vertical 1000 challenge experience.

I was going to keep my abseiling 69 floors down the side of One Island East very quiet and only tell after I have completed the feat but the programme does not work that way – so I am publishing my story now.

Yes, it is crazy but I believe in doing something outside one’s comfort zone. To be honest, I am petrified as I have never abseiled – so a real personal challenge.

I am also passionately supportive of giving young people opportunities to learn, develop and grow as my own life journey has been shaped by many opportunities which others have given me. Vertical 1000 is a good opportunity for me to do more.

I have no fundraising target but for donors every dollar counts and “the sky is the limit”, although on the day of the event, getting down to the ground level, as safely and as less awkwardly as I can make it, will be my goal.

I am a big fan of the outdoors and have climbed my share of high mountains for fun.  When the possibility of rappelling down One Island East presented itself, I was delighted to get involved.  Outward Bound is a great organisation dedicated to bringing outdoor skills and adventures to people from all walks of life.  Having had the pleasure of living in Hong Kong for the past 12 years, it is terrific to be able to give back in this wonderfully challenging and fun way

Growing up, I had a friend who led Outward Bound journeys into the wilderness, helping kids from often troubled backgrounds learn how to face their challenges. Today, in Hong Kong, kids are certainly facing numerous challenges, so the need to help them meet these is as important as ever. When I heard about the HK Vertical 1000 event, it sounded like an exciting way to help out in a small way. I’ve lived in Hong Kong for over 12 years, much of that time spent sitting behind a desk. So if I can overcome this personal challenge, hopefully others will be inspired to take on whatever challenges they face in life. Youth in Hong Kong need all the inspiration we can give them. Your donation will be a big help. Thanks!

I’m a long-distance runner and I currently hold the record for the Hong Kong women’s marathon. I think the best gift you could give someone is an opportunity to try something new, which is why I’m taking part in HK Vertical 1000 to encourage young people to explore new territory.

I quit my nursing job in 2014 and embraced my new career as a full-time runner when my coach suggested that I try for the Olympics. I’m glad I did because I wouldn’t be who I am today otherwise. Therefore, I want to inspire more young people to explore their talents and passions through my participation in this challenge.

I am a firefighter and a nine-time champion of the Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Contest. HK Vertical 1000 is a great opportunity for me not only to challenge myself, but also to promote a great cause.

I was raised on Cheung Chau Island and now also reside there. As a Cheung Chau resident, I feel that it’s my responsibility to promote our beloved island’s tradition, so I keep going back for the bun scrambling contest. I believe you must first lead by example if you want to advocate something. Through HK Vertical 1000, I want to encourage Hong Kong’s youth to leave their comfort zones and develop stronger minds.

I am a climber from Hong Kong. Taking part in HK Vertical 1000 is my way to give back to the community, as the donations will give youngsters the chance to discover new experiences.

Rock climbing has been a huge part of my life since I was 14 and it all began at a community centre, where I discovered and fell in love with this incredible sport. Since then, I have trained to become a professional athlete. Today, I remain grateful for the support I’d received from the centre during my teenage years. Being a part of HK Vertical 1000 is a chance for me to give back to the community, as the donations will support young people in Hong Kong to explore new experiences – ones that may transform their lives.

I am lucky to be representing Mandarin Oriental at this HK Vertical 1000. This is a unique opportunity to experience an epic abseil and to support a great cause at the same time. Growing up in Bermuda, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time outdoors. These were formative experiences for me and drove my interest in protecting wild spaces. Outward Bound’s programmes for young people are not only great development opportunities but are also one of the most important things that we can do to encourage a new generation of leaders who are passionate about being in and protecting the natural environment.

I am looking forward to HK Vertical 1000 which is supporting the excellent cause of raising funds for Outward Bound Hong Kong. My first expedition of many to the high mountains of the world was to Kilimanjaro on a trip organized by Outward Bound. I have always been impressed by their programmes and their work in the communities in which they operate. While most of my life has been spent on business matters, one of my chief pleasures is trekking and climbing in the mountains where I have done many abseils in interesting places. But definitely the highlight was the abseil down One Island East 2 years ago and I much look forward to repeating the experience.

I fully support the aims and values of Outward Bound. I believe in the power of sport, and physical outdoor adventures to change lives, to inspire confidence, and develop resilience in young people of all ages!. We are all at our best when we challenge our perceived limits.

I first learned to abseil at the Outward Bound School in Hong Kong, many, many years ago. I then went on to do another land and one sea-based course with them and still do a lot of outdoor activities – hill walking, cycling and jogging.

I know that this event is a bit extreme, especially as I am now old enough to have retired, but I feel that it would be good to come full circle and give a bit back to OB, and to possibly inspire some younger people, who may be unsure of their capabilities, that if a retiree like me can do these things, they could too.

My descent is dedicated to my lovely wife, Grace, who sadly passed away this year.

When I heard about the Vertical 1000 I was in equal parts fascinated and terrified. Why am I participating in the HK Vertical 1000 challenge?

Why not? I took my first Outward Bound course at age 10 (when I tried abseiling for my first time), and have taken 2 more other Outward Bound courses since then. Taking part in this challenge not only can raise fund for and promote Outward Bound in Hong Kong so more people can benefit the life-changing courses, but can also challenge myself and get to experience something that I only see people do in action movies.
