What an invaluable opportunity to live up to the Outward Bound motto “To strive, to serve and not to yield” – by bravely facing and combating the HK Vertical 1000 abseiling challenge!
It is a great honour to represent the Outward Bound (Alumni) Association in this fundraising event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our mother school, thanks to the kind sponsorship of Professor Roy Chung and the Bright Future Charitable Foundation.
Backed by my Spartan experience, I pledge to be brave to attempt, willing to face difficulty, believe in accomplishing and step out to challenge.

Living a childhood in a rooftop slum, my siblings and I had little access to any sport – except a rubber band jump rope, and a duct tape newspaper football. Growing up, I grab every chance to exercise, try different sports and run obstacle races. I discovered my true passion for X-games only after I could support myself financially.
I’m honored to take part in this thrilling challenge, raising fund so more disadvantaged youths can access Outward Bound’s adventurous life-changing courses and find their passion. And I get to top-up my X-games list and experience the extreme adrenaline pump from 1000 feet above.

I believe the only way to keep advancing is to keep challenging yourself. Being on the radio, I get the thrills from doing live shows and handling unexpected situations. Sometimes we fail, and we learn. But it’s the challenge that makes it all worthwhile.
Put that thought to a fantastic cause, supported by one of my dearest and most generous friends Ms Clara Chan (Lee Kee Group), I can’t wait to start training, and see how this fundraise will benefit more people!!
This is going to be best experience after my highest bungee jump (2013) and giving birth to 2 girls!
Supported by Chubb
For my dear friends, colleagues and partners, my participation of the “HK Vertical 1000” is a memorial event to represent my company Chubb to sponsor those disadvantaged youth in HK. It also served as one of a key milestone in my lifetime to challenge myself in overcome obstacles through move beyond my comfort zone.
Your support is definitely important to give me strength and my honor with your contribution along at this memorial times.

Taking a three-day, 60KM Desert Challenge, sailing on the sea, running the Marathon, I myself is a deep believer of outward bound training. I enjoy the feelings of taking challenge, facing the difficulties, and being strong. HK vertical 1000 is a great opportunity to explore my boundaries and I am quite looking forward to it.
As the board secretary of Wuhan College, I saw the difference OBHK made to our students. After the training of Outward Bound, they became more confident and more resilient. I would like to expend the impact of Outward Bound by sharing my own vertical 1000 challenge experience.
As a past participant of Outward Bound courses and races, I have had the first-hand experience in understanding the values and experiences gained from it!
Supported by Stan Group (Holdings) Limited
At Stan Group, entrepreneurship is not only our core value but lifestyle. We embrace challenges, nurture resilience and spearhead transformation. As a big fan of sport and adventurous activities, the Vertical 1000 marks one of my favorite events in the calendar. I’m honoured, excited and looking forward to taking part alongside with the other top executives, risk takers and challengers in town.

It is an absolutely meaningful event also a great opportunity to do something fun & exciting after giving birth of my 2nd child.
Time to step out of my comfort zone & go for a BIG challenge!!!

I was going to keep my abseiling 69 floors down the side of One Island East very quiet and only tell after I have completed the feat but the programme does not work that way – so I am publishing my story now.
Yes, it is crazy but I believe in doing something outside one’s comfort zone. To be honest, I am petrified as I have never abseiled – so a real personal challenge.
I am also passionately supportive of giving young people opportunities to learn, develop and grow as my own life journey has been shaped by many opportunities which others have given me. Vertical 1000 is a good opportunity for me to do more.
I have no fundraising target but for donors every dollar counts and “the sky is the limit”, although on the day of the event, getting down to the ground level, as safely and as less awkwardly as I can make it, will be my goal.
I am a big fan of the outdoors and have climbed my share of high mountains for fun. When the possibility of rappelling down One Island East presented itself, I was delighted to get involved. Outward Bound is a great organisation dedicated to bringing outdoor skills and adventures to people from all walks of life. Having had the pleasure of living in Hong Kong for the past 12 years, it is terrific to be able to give back in this wonderfully challenging and fun way
Growing up, I had a friend who led Outward Bound journeys into the wilderness, helping kids from often troubled backgrounds learn how to face their challenges. Today, in Hong Kong, kids are certainly facing numerous challenges, so the need to help them meet these is as important as ever. When I heard about the HK Vertical 1000 event, it sounded like an exciting way to help out in a small way. I’ve lived in Hong Kong for over 12 years, much of that time spent sitting behind a desk. So if I can overcome this personal challenge, hopefully others will be inspired to take on whatever challenges they face in life. Youth in Hong Kong need all the inspiration we can give them. Your donation will be a big help. Thanks!

I’m a long-distance runner and I currently hold the record for the Hong Kong women’s marathon. I think the best gift you could give someone is an opportunity to try something new, which is why I’m taking part in HK Vertical 1000 to encourage young people to explore new territory.
I quit my nursing job in 2014 and embraced my new career as a full-time runner when my coach suggested that I try for the Olympics. I’m glad I did because I wouldn’t be who I am today otherwise. Therefore, I want to inspire more young people to explore their talents and passions through my participation in this challenge.

I am a firefighter and a nine-time champion of the Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling Contest. HK Vertical 1000 is a great opportunity for me not only to challenge myself, but also to promote a great cause.
I was raised on Cheung Chau Island and now also reside there. As a Cheung Chau resident, I feel that it’s my responsibility to promote our beloved island’s tradition, so I keep going back for the bun scrambling contest. I believe you must first lead by example if you want to advocate something. Through HK Vertical 1000, I want to encourage Hong Kong’s youth to leave their comfort zones and develop stronger minds.
I am a climber from Hong Kong. Taking part in HK Vertical 1000 is my way to give back to the community, as the donations will give youngsters the chance to discover new experiences.
Rock climbing has been a huge part of my life since I was 14 and it all began at a community centre, where I discovered and fell in love with this incredible sport. Since then, I have trained to become a professional athlete. Today, I remain grateful for the support I’d received from the centre during my teenage years. Being a part of HK Vertical 1000 is a chance for me to give back to the community, as the donations will support young people in Hong Kong to explore new experiences – ones that may transform their lives.

I try to live a life rich in experience, setting myself goals to accomplish in whatever I do. I compete in trail running races and attend HIIT training classes to stay at my best at work. As the leader of a Hong Kong healthcare business, my aim is try to inspire people here to go the extra mile in living healthier and happier lives. And this is why I’m keen to take up the abseiling challenge, and by doing so, we can raise money to support young people in Hong Kong to have greater access to challenges and adventures that would change their lives. It is our continuous commitment in Bupa to care for our people and to make a positive impact on our community.

HK Vertical 1000 strike me as a fun yet challenging experience to participate in for a good cause – help provide opportunities for young generations to gain access to Outward Bound courses which is famous for equipping people to cope with unfamiliar environment and meanwhile nourish positive leadership behaviours. A rare exposure Hong Kong young people can benefit from tremendously.
Supported by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group
I am lucky to be representing Mandarin Oriental at this HK Vertical 1000. This is a unique opportunity to experience an epic abseil and to support a great cause at the same time. Growing up in Bermuda, I was fortunate to spend a lot of time outdoors. These were formative experiences for me and drove my interest in protecting wild spaces. Outward Bound’s programmes for young people are not only great development opportunities but are also one of the most important things that we can do to encourage a new generation of leaders who are passionate about being in and protecting the natural environment.
Supported by Chairman, Royal Geographical Society
Through the Royal Geographical Society, I have hosted speakers who are pushing the boundaries of human achievement across the world. Dangling off the top of a skyscraper is an opportunity for me to follow in my own small way. Mandarin Oriental, whom I work for, moved to One Island East in April and we have greatly enjoyed joining this community. The HK Vertical 1000 is an opportunity to celebrate this and give back to the community through Outward Bound, whose programmes provide amazing opportunities for young people to get outside and develop valuable skills and grit.

I believe in growing and reaching out to explore my potential. I have been looking for a new challenge since finishing my first Half Ironman race last year. Vertical 1000 is the perfect opportunity to challenge myself again and to share the experience with my children and perhaps my grandchildren.
I am looking forward to HK Vertical 1000 which is supporting the excellent cause of raising funds for Outward Bound Hong Kong. My first expedition of many to the high mountains of the world was to Kilimanjaro on a trip organized by Outward Bound. I have always been impressed by their programmes and their work in the communities in which they operate. While most of my life has been spent on business matters, one of my chief pleasures is trekking and climbing in the mountains where I have done many abseils in interesting places. But definitely the highlight was the abseil down One Island East 2 years ago and I much look forward to repeating the experience.

I love doing sports. My hobbies include basketball, golf, weight training and box. I love to take challenge every year and have recently just completed a triathlon in Taiwan and a Spartan race in Hong Kong. And therefore, I take this opportunity to participate in this abseiling event as my “annual challenge”. Not only I can treat this event as new challenge, I can also help young people to have the opportunity to learn from Outward Bound; One stone, two birds, I totally love this idea and I’m looking forward to be able enjoy the view of Victoria Harbour from 1000 Feet above Hong Kong.
Vertical 1000 is not only a unique opportunity to challenge myself but also a fundraising event for the young people in Hong Kong. I am so excited and looking forward to this amazing event!

I am doing it as a means to raise money to support Outward Bound in Hong Kong, which is a tremendous organization that gives young people access to our wonderful outdoors and wild spaces. This is a not to be missed opportunity to scare myself silly (I’ve done a lot of mountain climbing but skyscrapers are something else..) in support of Outward Bound – an organization enables young disadvantaged people to see the world from a totally different perspective – way beyond that of a smartphone screen – and to understand what they are really capable of achieving in life.

Can’t wait to meet the challenge on 9 December 2017, an event that makes everyone give out a big “wow” and a very good example of what we were taught in the Outward Bound School:
“We are bounded only by the limits of our imaginations”
We are all grateful for the opportunity to help raising funds for the School.

I’m excited to have the opportunity to be one of the HKVertical1000 challengers. Can’t wait to enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the most iconic building in the Island East where I live and go to work. I hope this experience could inspire others to step out of their comfort zone (mobile phones), see things from a different angle and live life to the full (or fool)! Great thanks to my sponsor Mr St John Flaherty, my colleague Audrey Li who spares her seat to me and the Swire Company.

I am looking forward to HK Vertical 1000 which is supporting the excellent cause of raising funds for Outward Bound Hong Kong.
My first experience of many to the high mountains of the world was to Kilimanjaro on a trip organized by Outward bound. I have always been impressed by their programmes and their work in the communities in which they operate.
While most of my life has been spent on business matters, one of my chief pleasures is trekking and climbing in the mountains where I have done many abseils in interesting places. But since my school days in England over 50 years ago, when I used to abseil down the school tower, this will be my first abseil down a building and definitely the longest abseil I have experience anywhere!
I fully support the aims and values of Outward Bound. I believe in the power of sport, and physical outdoor adventures to change lives, to inspire confidence, and develop resilience in young people of all ages!. We are all at our best when we challenge our perceived limits.
For me the opportunity to abseil down One Island East, one of Hong Kong’s iconic buildings is a unique challenge I cannot resist ( even though it feels terrifying!). Knowing that the event will raise funds for such a good cause gives me extra incentive to overcome my fears.
I have taken part in the Outward Bound camps as a student and participated in the adventure races more recently. To partake in the Vertical 1000 is a dream challenge while supporting an incredible organisation that does important work in Hong Kong! Supported by Mr. Helmuth Hennig
I first learned to abseil at the Outward Bound School in Hong Kong, many, many years ago. I then went on to do another land and one sea-based course with them and still do a lot of outdoor activities – hill walking, cycling and jogging.
I know that this event is a bit extreme, especially as I am now old enough to have retired, but I feel that it would be good to come full circle and give a bit back to OB, and to possibly inspire some younger people, who may be unsure of their capabilities, that if a retiree like me can do these things, they could too.
My descent is dedicated to my lovely wife, Grace, who sadly passed away this year.

I decided to do this challenge because I wanted to know how it feels to be dangling outside a 300m tall building! And of course it’s for a good cause.
I am joining the event from Switzerland as two of my friends in Hong Kong told me about the good work Outward Bound is doing for young people there. I hope by participating that I can help raise more funds for less fortunate youth who can benefit from a course in the great outdoors.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. Ever since I was a little girl, I enjoyed challenged myself to many different things, like Bungee jumping, Rock climbing, Sky diving, etc. Over the years, these challenges and experiences had enabled me to positively face obstacles and difficulties in life. When I first learnt about the HK1000 challenge organized by the Outward bound, I was so surprised and yet excited. I took this up without a heartbeat. I believe this not only is an one off extremely rare opportunity, but also an experience of a life time that will make a permanent impact to my life. I sincerely thank Lee Kee Group for sponsoring me, and I will be looking forward to take part in this remarkable challenge. Participating Company – Lee Kee Group.

I was born and raised in Austria to a family of 5 kids. Since my earliest memories I spent most of my time in the mountains either through skiing, hiking, climbing or canoeing. More than 7 years ago I moved together with my Sophie to Asia and have since been missing the alpine flair of my home-country.
Taking part in HK Vertical 1000 brings me closest to what I love most – being outside in scaling and dizzy heights and overcoming one of human’s deepest fears.
I am very honored to take part in this meaningful activity to raise funds for such a worthy cause. Participating Company – Jebsen
Deacons has been involved with outward Bound since we helped set it up in 1970, and this event sounded like an exciting way to raise money for a very worthwhile cause. I am scared just to imagine hanging myself 1000 feet above the ground, but I knew I had to do this the first moment I learnt about the adventure. As I always say to my friends, “Your Only Limit is You”. It is my wish to bring some inspiration to others through my stories and challenges. And what better way to achieve that than to raise fund for a good cause!? Participating Company – Deacons

Thanks to our donor for this opportunity!
When I heard about the Vertical 1000 I was in equal parts fascinated and terrified. Life’s most memorable experiences often fall into this category so when the opportunity arose to participate I jumped at the chance. Encouraging youngsters to push outside of their comfort zone and as grow as people is what Outward Bound aims to achieve through their programs. So it feels that this is a very appropriate fundraising event for this charity and I feel privileged to be able to take part.
As a videographer, I’ve worked closely on a few projects with Outward Bound HK, and during my experience learned just how beneficial the outdoor programs is for the young minds and disadvantaged youths of Hong Kong.
When interviewing the students, I learned a lot about the demanding realities of schooling here and just how much Outward Bound can influence there lives, opening their eyes to new experiences and Providing opportunities they wouldn’t have once had.
I sincerely thank my dad Stephen Taylor for sponsoring me for this thrilling experience and massive thanks to the Outward Bound team for organizing such an extraordinary event.

Why am I participating in the HK Vertical 1000 challenge?
Why not? I took my first Outward Bound course at age 10 (when I tried abseiling for my first time), and have taken 2 more other Outward Bound courses since then. Taking part in this challenge not only can raise fund for and promote Outward Bound in Hong Kong so more people can benefit the life-changing courses, but can also challenge myself and get to experience something that I only see people do in action movies.
